Safety

This page provides and overview of Sammamish’s fire and police services.

Fire Service

As of 2013, Sammamish contracts fire services from the multi-city fire protection agency Eastside Fire & Rescue (EFR). In 1999, EFR was created by a consolidation of King County Washington Fire Districts 10 and 38, and the Cities of Issaquah and North Bend, with the City of Sammamish joining the consolidation in January 2000.

In 2013, Sammamish paid $6.04 million to EFR for fire service. Sammamish owns 40 to 50 percent of EFR’s vehicles (source). Sammamish owns station 83 which is close to the city of Issaquah. In 2012 Station 83 responded to nearly 47 percent of its 6,262 total calls outside the city of Sammamish (source).

The following information is from the East Fire & Rescue’s 2012 Annual Report:

Police Protection

Sammamish has a very low rate of crime, and almost all residents surveyed (in 2012) felt safe in Sammamish (see below).

In 2012, neighborhoodscout.com ranked Sammamish the 11th safest city of 25,000 residents or more, based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents.

Recent crime stories for Sammamish, including police blotter summaries can be found with this query at the Sammamish Review.

Sammamish contracts police services from King County. For more information about police services, and for the non-emergency dispatch number, see the Police page on the city’s website.

In 2012 King County leased (with a 20 year term) the second story of the city hall building and relocated to that space the Sheriff’s Office East Precinct North headquarters, called the Sammamish Station. Read more about the Sammamish station here.

Perception Of Safety

From the 2012 Citizen’s Survey by Hebert Research:

Among those who stated an opinion on this question

  • 95.9% felt either ‘Very Safe or Somewhat Safe’ (increased from 91.6% in 2008)
  • 4.1% felt either ‘Somewhat Unsafe or Very Unsafe’ (decreased from 8.4% in 2008)
  • 7 out of 402 respondents answered the question with ‘No Opinion’ and were excluded from both data sets.
